Read all about this amazing country...

After many years of internal or ‘civil’ war, Angola is making a new start.

Angola is the only country where you can find an animal called a palanca, a type of antelope. And that’s not all Angola has to offer animal lovers. There are also giraffes, ostriches and elephants!

Four-year-old Estrella from Angola had malaria, which kills more children in Angola than any other disease. Luckily, Estrella got better.
More facts
There are 15.5 million people in Angola, but fewer than one in three Angolan women can read and write compared to just over half of Angolan men. Hopefully, this situation will improve as 57 per cent of boys and 58 per cent of girls now go to primary school.

Angola was ruled by the Portuguese for over four hundred years until 1975. As a result, its official language is Portuguese. But many other languages – like the African languages of Umbundu and Kikongo - are spoken as well.

Although Angola is one of the poorest countries in the world, it has a rich resource under its land – oil. It's the second largest producer of oil in the whole of Africa below the Sahara Desert.

It is pretty unusual in the UK or Ireland for a child to die before it is five years old. But in Angola, 260 out of every 1000 children die before they’re five.

The Angolan flag is red, black and gold. The black stands for Africa, while the red is a sign of the country’s battle against Portuguese colonisation. In the middle is a cog representing the country's workers, and a machete (a type of tool used for cutting), which stands for its farmers. There's also a star in the centre, standing for team spirit and the way that the country has moved forward.
