Tabarouk's story

Lots of girls in Afghanistan have to get married when they are very young. This happens more often if the girl’s family is poor, because it's traditional for the husband-to-be’s family to give the girl’s family some money, called a 'bride price'.

Tabarouk had to get married when she was only 13 years old. At 16, she's expecting her second baby.

Clinic four hours away by donkey

In Afghanistan, if you live in the countryside, there aren’t hospitals or clinics to go to when you're about to have a baby.  And without good medical care, giving birth at home can be dangerous.

Tabarouk is expecting to give birth at home. 'It took four hours riding on a donkey to get to the clinic so I don't want to go back when I'm heavily pregnant,' she explains.

Help from the family
Luckily for Tabarouk, her husband's mum Sana'oubar will be there to help her give birth. Three years ago the government paid for Sana'oubar to train to be a midwife, so she’s given Tabarouk lots of advice. ‘She told me not to lift heavy things, not to work too hard and to take care of my health,' says Tabarouk.

Sana'oubar likes her job, 'because it involves lots of talking!' she says. 'I like it when women come to my house and we sit down and chat.'
