Going green

Canon Burrows Church of England Primary isn’t your average school. Here, protecting the planet comes first. It has its own nature reserve that pupils help look after, and lots more. In fact it’s so green that the school has won a Green Flag four times for its hard work.

Daniel, 11, explains why his school is so cool. 'We make our environment look attractive and "nature-friendly". We have butterfly boxes, bird boxes (one even has a camera inside so we can observe the birds), a butterfly garden and litter bins and benches,' he says.

‘We're an eco-school,' explains Daniel, 11. 'We've won the flag four times! Our school cares for the environment in lots of different ways’
Energy saving
The school needs to show that it is 100% committed to the environment in order to earn a Green Flag. Being eco-friendly involves looking after the whole planet, so saving energy is really important. 'Basic things like turning the lights off when we leave the room, not leaving computers on stand-by and turning taps off to stop us from wasting water all help,' Daniel adds.

Pupils have lessons that teach them how to look after their environment and the whole world, as well as about global warming
Green Day
There’s lots of other eco stuff going on too – there are regular assemblies where pupils share information about the environment, and ‘Green Days’ where pupils can get dressed up in things like recycled clothes!

One of the best things about Canon Burrows Primary, is that everyone has a chance to make their voice heard. ‘We have an ‘Eco Committee,’ says Daniel. 'One member from each class is nominated, and the pupils get together to share ideas and discuss changes which will help improve our school, the local community and the world.’
‘We maintain the valley and brook (Taunton stream, seen in this pic) which is situated behind our school. We repair bridges, make pathways, clear litter and plant bulbs and trees,’ Daniel adds
