You might think you’d be happy if you couldn’t go to school! But Mamta couldn’t go because her school was under water. Her village in the north of India was hit badly by floods. She lost all her books and pencils.

'I like to go to school. I have very good friends,' says Mamta. 'Now I don’t know when I can go to school.'

Although Mamta is only 8 years old, she looks after her little brother Rohit while her father searches for work and her mother goes out to collect food for their goat.

Mamta and her family live in a very poor part of India, which was devastated by floods in 2007. The road to their village is now clear but the people who live there there haven’t had much help.
