Even if you like to be the centre of attention, there are times when we all need a bit of space. And when you get the call of nature is definitely one of them!
‘We used to just dig holes, but now we have a latrine with a tin roof,’ says Catalina, 12, from Peru, in South America. ‘The best thing about it is that it has a door so that no one else can see you. It’s so good because there aren’t any flies either,’ she explains.

Catalina loves her family’s new loo. ‘Mind you, I did quite like being out in the open before!’ she says Catalina’s lovely loo is just one of the great changes her family has made to their home. They won a competition run by an organisation Christian Aid works with, to help people realise that they can do things differently and make life better for themselves.
‘We improved our kitchen with a better oven,' says Catalina, 'We built a new room and a cover for our animals. And we planted flowers and vegetables.’
Now the family eats more healthily thanks to the vegetables they grow. And they’ve been able to make money from selling a herb called oregano, so Catalina can buy things she needs for school.

‘We use toilet paper, but sometime we also use old school books as toilet paper. Nothing goes to waste!'
